Frequently Asked Questions
The Summer Journalism Academy (SJA) is an immersive program for high school students to learn the fundamentals of journalism from current Harvard Crimson staff. It covers reporting, writing, newspaper operations, and media-adjacent fields, while also offering insight into college journalism.
No! SJA is open to all students, regardless of experience. Whether you're a beginner or have worked on a school newspaper, the program is designed to help you develop essential journalism skills.
Students will gain hands-on experience in news writing, interviewing, investigative journalism, multimedia reporting, and opinion writing. The program also covers the business, design, and tech aspects of running a publication. Additionally, there will be college admissions advice and sessions on building a journalism portfolio.
Current Harvard Crimson editors lead the sessions, sharing their expertise and experiences in collegiate journalism. Students will also hear from professionals in media-related fields through workshops and guest presentations.
Stay tuned for the schedule. The program takes place the weekdays of July 7-16.
SJA is held in person on Harvard's campus and virtually. This allows students from across the country (and internationally) to participate from home.
Yes! There will be scheduled breaks throughout the day to ensure students can stay engaged and focused.
A computer with internet access is required to participate. No additional materials or software are necessary.
Yes! At the end of the program, students will receive a Certificate of Completion recognizing their participation in the Summer Journalism Academy.

Some meals will be provided, but not all days include meals. We recommend bringing money for additional meals or snacks. Harvard Square has a wide range of dining options, including quick-service restaurants, cafés, and sit-down eateries.

Tuition for the Summer Journalism Academy In-Person Program is $950. For the Virtual Option it is $750. This includes participation in all the programmed activities, mentorship from Crimson Editors, talks with world-class journalists, and some meals. It does not include hotel or accommodation.
We also offer generous financial aid and discounts for group registrants!

Yes, we offer limited financial aid that is entirely need-based.
Our financial aid only covers tuition costs; it does not cover travel, accommodations, or other expenses.
To apply for financial aid, visit the financial aid application pages for the conference you are registering for. You must submit a 1099 Tax Form with your parent’s financial information, along with any other relevant financial documents. If you are from outside the United States, please submit the equivalent of an Income Tax Return.
